About this blog
This blog is still evolving, and its precise subject matter may change slowly over time. But this is primarily about my thoughts and ideas on issues of personal finance, investing, and the American (and the world) financial market.
You may wonder what is another blog doing in an already populated
niche (a few of my favorites are listed under “Cool Blogs”). The niche may be crowded, but there is also an endless range of issues to talk about. Besides, this is a community endeavor, not a zero-sum game. Each one of us brings a unique style and voice to the table, and helps broaden our collective understanding of the complex subject.
I am not formally schooled in finance (you do not need to be to manage your own money). Knowing the basics of personal finance helps, of course, which is a major objective of this blog. I study investing literature and financial markets as a serious hobby. Besides their relevance to my financial health, the topics give me as much intellectual thrill as I get from my paid job as a scientist.
I have learned that despite the complicated jargons and concepts that clutter financial literature, the fundamentals of personal finance are sound common sense (after all, this is about managing my own money). It is this common sense that I revisit in this blog, as someone who is serious with money but enjoys talking about it.
I should tell you now what this site is not about - you will not find here any expert advice on how to construct a “winning” portfolio by using “optimal” asset allocation strategy, or a list of today’s “hottest” stocks or mutual funds (in other words, no investment pornography
). If you are looking for specific financial advice, this is probably a wrong place (see the disclaimer at the bottom of this page). You alone are responsible for any decision you make based on the information presented here.

About Roy
I am a biologist, and I work at a University trying to understand the interactions among biological species and with their environment, what causes the decline of a species population, and what we can do to prevent a species from becoming extinct.
When I am not working, and not playing with my little daughter, I am usually found either curled up on my couch with a refreshing book (on investing, among other topics), or with my laptop working on the next post for this blog.
